Manchester City are increasingly running into Brazilian clubs determined to stop elite teenage talents leaving too early – and Flamengo believe they have just won one of those battles behind the scenes.
The Rio de Janeiro side moved quickly to secure 16-year-old Cristian Araújo after the attacking midfielder emerged as one of the breakout names at this year’s Brazilian Youth Cup.
Reports from Brazil state the City Football Group had been tracking the teenager closely before Flamengo stepped in to get the deal done.
Cristian Araújo was one of the youngest regular starters in the tournament. Even at just 15 years old during the competition, he quickly became Mirassol’s creative leader.
