Manchester City are reportedly preparing for the possibility of losing Erling Haaland to Real Madrid next summer, with the Norwegian having a release clause of €150m in his contract. New Director of Football Hugo Viana is said to be looking at Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon as a potential replacement, with the striker having a buyout fee of €100m.

Viana is said to be in contact with Gyokeres’ representatives, with the player being dubbed as the “new Haaland” by Sky Sports. While Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool have been linked with Gyokeres in the past, City’s interest is more recent and Viana sees him as a priority target. It remains to be seen whether Haaland will actually leave City, as reports on his release clause vary and he still has two years left on his contract.

The journalist who wrote the initial article about City’s contingency plans, Sacha Tavolieri, has been inconsistent with transfer stories in the past. Haaland’s release clause has been reported as high as €200m, making it unlikely that any club would be willing to pay such a fee. City are under no pressure to sell Haaland unless a significant offer is made, and it remains to be seen whether Real Madrid or any other team will meet the asking price.
