Manchester City have strategically set the stage for a potential move for West Ham star Lucas Paqueta in the upcoming summer transfer window, as per sources from Football Insider. This move comes after City allowed midfielder Kalvin Phillips to join West Ham in January for a reduced fee, aiming to strengthen their relationship with the London club as they look to make a move for Paqueta.
West Ham signed Phillips on loan for a bargain £3 million plus wages until the end of the 2023-24 season. Despite their previous failed attempt to sign the Brazilian playmaker last summer, City still hold a keen interest in Paqueta and have already laid the groundwork for a potential future deal.
Previously, Manchester City had agreed in principle to an £80 million deal for Paqueta with West Ham. However, due to an FA investigation surrounding suspicious betting activities linked to the player, City had to abandon the transfer and focus on signing Matheus Nunes from Wolves instead.
Football Insider recently reported that West Ham are awaiting the outcome of the investigation into Paqueta’s betting violations, which is nearing completion. Paqueta has been a key player for West Ham in the 2023-24 season, making 28 appearances and contributing with five goals and six assists.
The 26-year-old midfielder is contracted to West Ham until June 2027, having joined the club in a record-breaking £51 million deal from Lyon in 2022. In addition to this transfer update, there are speculations that Everton could potentially sue Manchester City in a new twist regarding Financial Fair Play regulations.
