Manchester City target Jeremie Frimpong is expected to leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season, with a release clause in his contract allowing any team to sign him for €40m. The 23-year-old Dutch wingback has had an excellent season with Leverkusen, tallying 14 goals and 12 assists in 44 appearances, making him an attractive option for potential suitors.
City and Arsenal are reported to be the two Premier League clubs with the most interest in signing Frimpong. The player already has a connection to City, having come through their academy before moving to Celtic. Despite having Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis in the squad, City may be looking for a long-term replacement for Walker, who is turning 34 soon. However, Frimpong’s playing style as a wingback in a back five may need to be evaluated for how it fits City’s system and defensive needs.
Frimpong is believed to be keen on returning to the Premier League, making a move back to City a potential destination. While City may not be desperate to strengthen the right-back position, a long-term replacement for Walker will eventually be needed. City’s recruitment department would need to carefully consider Frimpong’s ability to adapt to a back four system before pursuing a potential deal.
