Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing 16-year-old River Plate attacking midfielder Franco Mastantuono. The Premier League champions are said to have made a move to secure his signature, although they face competition from other clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Chelsea. Mastantuono recently signed his first professional contract with River Plate, and his release clause currently stands at €45m (£38.6m).
Manchester City have a history of signing players from River Plate, such as Edson Alvarez and Claudio Echeverri. Both players initially remained on loan at the Argentinian club before making the move to City. Mastantuono, like Echeverri, represented Argentina in the Under 17 World Cup and has made 10 senior appearances for his club. Despite having a European passport, Mastantuono may remain at River Plate on loan to gain more experience.
If Manchester City want to sign Mastantuono, they may need to pay his release clause to secure his services. The young midfielder has shown promise on the field and has already made an impact at senior level. City’s strong relationship with River Plate could give them an advantage in negotiating a deal for Mastantuono, similar to their previous agreements with players from the Argentinian club.
