Manchester City is facing 130 charges for breaking Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations, illicit financing, and lack of cooperation between 2008 and 2023. An Independent Commission, led by Murray Rosen KC, has been set up to hear the charges, with one member being a financial expert. The hearings will be held in private and are expected to last at least two months due to the complexity of the case.
If Manchester City is found guilty, potential punishments could include fines, points deductions, suspensions, or even stripping the club of some of its Premier League titles. Relegation is also a possibility, but would require a vote by the other 19 Premier League clubs. Leicester City successfully appealed a similar case earlier this year, giving City’s lawyers confidence in their own trial, although the outcome is uncertain.
While City could potentially appeal any guilty charges, the final decision on relegation would be made by the Premier League clubs based on Rule B.6. City would not be able to pursue the Court of Arbitration for Sport if their appeal fails, as that option is not available under Premier League rules. Ultimately, the outcome will depend on the Independent Commission’s recommendations and how the clubs decide to enforce them.
