Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has criticized Manchester City striker Erling Haaland for failing to impress against “real elite defenders” in key fixtures this season. Carragher selected Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins ahead of Haaland in his Premier League Team of the Year, citing Haaland’s struggles in big games against top defenders like those from Real Madrid and Liverpool.
While Haaland has scored an impressive 36 goals in 42 appearances this campaign, Carragher’s comments have raised questions about whether the City star is a ‘flat-track bully’. Haaland has failed to score against Real Madrid in four meetings and has a rather average record against Arsenal, but has had success against Liverpool and other Premier League opponents like Wolves and Manchester United.
Despite the criticism, it is important to remember that Haaland is only 23 years old and has room to continue developing his game. While Carragher’s comments are more measured compared to other criticisms Haaland has faced this season, it is believed that the striker still has the potential to become an even more formidable force in the future.
