Manchester City Fans Pick Their Midfield to Face Man United After Porto Performance

Manchester City Fans Have Made Their Midfield Choice for Man United Clash

Manchester City’s midfield selection has become one of the biggest talking points ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby, and supporters appear to have a clear idea of who should get the nod after the performance in Porto.

A City Xtra discussion asking whether Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernández should start together against Manchester United produced a wide range of reactions from Manchester City supporters.

While there was some disagreement over the final midfield combination, one name appeared repeatedly: Elliot Anderson.

The debate also highlighted growing excitement around Bouaddi, while several supporters believe Enzo Fernández should be a guaranteed starter.

For new Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca, the derby provides another major opportunity to establish his preferred midfield structure in the post-Pep Guardiola era.

Elliot Anderson emerges as a popular choice

Among the supporters responding to the discussion, Anderson received considerable backing.

One fan, Rayan cherki era, kept the selection simple, replying: “Elliot and ayyoub.”

Another supporter went even further, posting only: “Anderson.”

The simplicity of those responses reflects an important part of the discussion. Anderson’s performances have clearly convinced a section of the fanbase that he deserves another opportunity from the start.

There was also strong support for Anderson alongside Enzo Fernández and Rayan Cherki.

Felix Alai selected:

“Anderson, Enzo & Cherki.”

That same combination was echoed by addielessie, who wrote:

“Anderson,Enzo then cherki.”

Another supporter, hamza, also went with Anderson, Enzo and Cherki.

The repeated appearance of those three names suggests that some City supporters are beginning to see a midfield built around Anderson’s energy, Enzo’s control and Cherki’s creativity.

Bouaddi divides opinion

Ayyoub Bouaddi was another major part of the discussion.

Several Manchester City fans want the young midfielder involved against Manchester United, particularly after what they saw in Porto.

Joshua Ndegwa was emphatic:

“AYYOUB BOUADDI MUST START 💪💪💪💪”

That was not an isolated opinion.

Code Blue selected all three players mentioned in the original question:

“Anderson, bouaddi and enzo.”

Another supporter, wajdi aguero, also appeared to favour Bouaddi over another midfield option, writing:

“I’d go for bouaddi instead of nunes.”

That reaction is particularly interesting because it suggests the debate is not simply Anderson versus Bouaddi. Some supporters are considering how Maresca can balance youth, physicality, creativity and control in the middle of the pitch.

Bouaddi’s emergence has therefore created another selection headache for the new City boss.

Enzo Fernández still has strong support

Although Anderson and Bouaddi generated plenty of discussion, Enzo Fernández remains a popular choice.

Several fans included the Argentine midfielder in their preferred lineup.

D££ suggested:

“Enzo Anderson and cherki .. bouaddi can seat”

The message was blunt, but the selection was clear. For that supporter, Enzo, Anderson and Cherki should start, with Bouaddi beginning on the bench.

That opinion was shared by several others.

Sarthak Pawar went with:

“Ando enzo and kova”

while also arguing that Semenyo should be on the bench.

Meanwhile, J-Sev simply replied:

“Enzo and the other guys”

The variety of responses demonstrates that supporters agree on some names but remain divided over the final midfield position.

Anderson, Enzo and Cherki gaining momentum

Perhaps the strongest trend in the fan reactions is the repeated selection of Anderson, Enzo Fernández and Cherki.

The combination appeared in multiple responses, including from Felix Alai, addielessie, hamza and jrdn_.

jrdn_ wrote:

“Anderson Enzo Cherki”

That consistency could be significant for Maresca.

Cherki offers something different from a conventional central midfielder. His technical ability and creativity can give City another route through a compact United midfield. Pairing him with Anderson and Enzo could potentially provide a blend of energy, progression and invention.

Anderson, meanwhile, can provide the running and intensity required in a derby.

Enzo brings experience and passing quality.

The question for Maresca is whether that combination provides enough defensive security.

Some fans want Bouaddi to start

Despite the popularity of the Anderson-Enzo-Cherki combination, there is clearly a section of the fanbase that wants Bouaddi involved from the opening whistle.

The strongest message came from Joshua Ndegwa, whose emphatic demand that Bouaddi “MUST START” captured the excitement surrounding the youngster.

Code Blue also selected Bouaddi alongside Anderson and Enzo.

This creates a fascinating tactical dilemma for Maresca.

If he selects Anderson, Bouaddi and Enzo, City could have a midfield with plenty of energy and ball-winning potential. However, leaving Cherki out could mean sacrificing some of the creativity that has become increasingly important to City’s attacking play.

On the other hand, selecting Anderson, Enzo and Cherki would give the side a more creative profile but leave Bouaddi waiting for his opportunity.

Foden enters the conversation

Interestingly, not every supporter focused exclusively on the three players named in the City Xtra discussion.

SirPepGuordiola suggested:

“Enzo anderson foden.”

That is another intriguing option.

Phil Foden remains a player capable of changing the dynamic of a Manchester derby, particularly when operating centrally and finding pockets of space around the opposition midfield.

Another supporter, xenon, appeared to have a different prediction altogether:

“Foden’s first goal of the season is against united”

That reaction may not directly answer the midfield-selection question, but it demonstrates the wider expectation surrounding Foden ahead of the derby.

For Maresca, having Foden available gives him another tactical weapon.

Gvardiol criticism adds another layer

Not all of the fan reaction was focused on midfield.

One supporter, Addicted, questioned why more attention was not being given to Josko Gvardiol’s performance.

The fan wrote that Gvardiol looked uncomfortable and suggested that Ait-Nouri should start instead.

That reaction is important because Manchester City’s selection problems may extend beyond midfield.

If Maresca decides to make changes after Porto, he could potentially alter more than one position.

The derby is therefore becoming a broader test of how quickly the new manager is prepared to make difficult selection decisions.

What should Maresca do against Manchester United?

Based on the fan reactions, Anderson appears to have built significant support for another start.

The biggest disagreement concerns who should join him.

One group wants Anderson, Enzo Fernández and Rayan Cherki.

Another wants Anderson, Bouaddi and Enzo Fernández.

There are also supporters who would bring Foden into the equation, while others would select Kovacic or make changes elsewhere.

That split gives Maresca plenty to consider.

The Porto performance appears to have changed the conversation around City’s midfield. Rather than simply asking which established players should start, supporters are now demanding opportunities for newer options who have shown they can contribute.

Anderson’s name stands out particularly strongly.

Manchester derby could reveal Maresca’s midfield hierarchy

Sunday’s meeting with Manchester United could provide an important indication of Maresca’s midfield hierarchy.

The Italian inherited a Manchester City squad undergoing significant change after Guardiola’s departure in June 2026. Every selection decision therefore carries additional importance.

If Anderson starts again, it could suggest that Maresca sees him as an important part of his plans.

If Bouaddi is selected, it would represent another significant vote of confidence in the young midfielder.

And if Enzo and Cherki are included, City could prioritise technical quality and attacking creativity.

Whatever Maresca decides, the supporters have made their feelings clear.

Anderson has emerged as one of the most popular choices, Enzo Fernández remains highly trusted, and Bouaddi is rapidly becoming a player fans want to see from the start.

The Manchester derby will reveal which of those competing ideas Maresca believes gives Manchester City the best chance of winning.

And judging by the reaction to the City Xtra post, supporters are already waiting impatiently to see the answer.
