Manchester City could potentially make a move to re-sign James Trafford, a player they sold last year. Despite having a buyback option in his deal, it seems unlikely that City would be willing to pay the reported high fee, especially for a backup goalkeeper. The current plan is for Stefan Ortega to become the number one if Ederson were to depart, leaving Trafford’s potential return in question.
Trafford, who had a challenging debut season as a Premier League goalkeeper with Burnley, has room for improvement but has been praised for his potential. While City may have interest in bringing him back, it would only make sense if he were to be considered as a first-choice goalkeeper, given the high fee involved. However, the likelihood of Trafford becoming City’s number one remains uncertain, as Ortega is expected to take on that role in the event of Ederson’s departure.
Journalist Alex Crook has hinted at City’s potential interest in pursuing Trafford, with the player’s move to Newcastle reportedly falling through. Despite his struggles at Burnley, Trafford’s talent has not gone unnoticed, and it will be interesting to see if City ultimately decide to activate their buyback clause and bring him back to the club.
