Manchester City has officially completed the signing of Claudio Echeverri, a highly-rated 18-year-old midfielder from River Plate in Argentina. The Premier League champions have confirmed that they have sealed the deal for a fee of around £12.5million with add-ons. Echeverri has signed a contract with City until the summer of 2028 but will continue to play for River Plate until January next year.
The club’s official website released a statement expressing their excitement in welcoming Echeverri to the team and wishing him the best of luck for his remaining time with River Plate. The young midfielder, who recently turned 18, has already made six senior appearances for River Plate and captained Argentina to the semi-finals of the Under-17 World Cup in November and December last year.
Manchester City had previously signed Julian Alvarez from River Plate in 2022, and Echeverri will follow a similar path to join the team. The club has also agreed to loan out England midfielder Kalvin Phillips to West Ham until the end of the season, with an option to buy. Phillips joined City from Leeds for £45million in July 2022 but has struggled to secure a regular spot in the team under Pep Guardiola.
Despite interest from Crystal Palace and Newcastle, Phillips chose to join West Ham, considering the club’s current position in the Premier League and their involvement in the Europa League. The midfielder is looking to gain more game time in preparation for Euro 2024 this summer. West Ham manager David Moyes is also keen on offloading players and potentially bringing in Ajax’s Steven Bergwijn as a replacement for Said Benrahma, who is likely to leave before the transfer window closes.
Overall, the latest signings and loan transfers reflect Manchester City’s strategic approach to developing young talents and allowing players to gain valuable experience and opportunities at various clubs.
