Manchester City are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after beating Real Madrid 4-2 on aggregate.
Goals from Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus handed Manchester City a 2-1 win over Real Madrid to seal their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Pep Guardiola was without the injured Sergio Aguero, who remains in Barcelona for treatment on a knee injury, but the Argentine’s absence did not hamper City as goals from Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus ensured they will take their place in the last-eight mini-tournament in Lisbon.
Sterling took advantage of some sloppy Madrid defending to give City the lead in the first half before Karim Benzema headed the visitors level just before the half-hour mark.
City regained the lead on the night when Jesus beat Thibaut Courtois with a clever finish, and that strike was enough to end Madrid’s challenge on the night and in the tie.
This was a great City performance over two legs, beating one of the tournament favourites and deservedly going through to the next stage in Lisbon. The only lingering sadness was that there were no fans present in the Stadium to watch a momentous game.
