Manchester City, who have only signed one player so far in the transfer window, have missed out on their target Dani Olmo as he reached an agreement to join Barcelona. Olmo, who had impressed during Euro 2024 with Spain, was considered a potential long-term replacement for Kevin De Bruyne at City. However, concerns over his injury record led the club to not make a move for him, allowing Barcelona to secure a deal worth €64 million. City, with plenty of options in advanced midfield positions, decided that Olmo was too big of a risk despite his talent.
Barcelona’s successful bid for Olmo, who strongly wanted to return to his former club, signifies a missed opportunity for Manchester City. The player’s performances at RB Leipzig and the Euros showcased his quality, but his injury history and the financial implications of the deal were factors that deterred City from pursuing him. With players like Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, and Julian Alvarez available in similar positions, City opted not to make a move for Olmo, allowing Barcelona to secure the talented midfielder they had been targeting.
