Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has finalised his backroom team for next season, with Rodolfo Borrell becoming assistant boss and Enzo Maresca rejoining the club.
The changes, announced by the Premier League champions on Tuesday, were prompted by the departure of Guardiola’s previous number two, Juanma Lillo, last month.
Following Lillo’s departure, rumours began to circulate regarding who would replace him on the Manchester City bench.
One such name was former Academy coach Enzo Maresca – who enjoyed much success with the club before his move to Italy. After a largely unsuccessful spell, Maresca left his position at Parma last autumn, and became available once again.
Despite the assistant coach role being available, an official statement confirming Enzo Maresca’s return to the club has confirmed that he will not become Pep Guardiola’s number two for the new season.
However, City have now confirmed that Rodolfo Borello has been promoted to Lillo’s role, with Maresca taking the Spaniard’s place on the coaching staff.
Borrell moves into his latest role at City, having previously been Academy Technical Director between 2014 and 2016 and part of Guardiola’s backroom staff since the Catalan’s arrival at the Club.
The news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
