Pundits often make bold comments about players, even the best in the Premier League like those at Manchester City. For example, Paul Merson apologized for calling Kevin De Bruyne overpriced and unnecessary when he joined City in 2015. Despite playing well, City players like Kyle Walker have faced criticism, with Roy Keane calling Walker an “idiot.” However, players like Walker excel and help City win titles, showing the pundits’ comments can be off-base. In another instance, Keane compared Erling Haaland to a “League Two player,” but he has since proven to be one of the best strikers in the world, with Mikel calling out Keane’s mistake.
Mikel’s comments highlight the fact that not every player needs to be technically outstanding to be world-class, as Haaland’s primary job at City is to score goals, which he has done remarkably well. Despite initial doubts, Haaland has proven himself as a crucial player for City, making a mockery of Keane’s criticism. Guardiola’s support of Haaland and his understanding of the player’s injury concerns show that the Norwegian striker is set for a special season, further proving Keane’s initial assessment wrong. As Haaland continues to dominate English football, he is likely to silence critics like Keane with his on-field performances.
