Manchester City’s on-loan Portugal international defender Joao Cancelo has made his future intentions clear beyond the current season. The 29-year-old has been in a state of uncertainty regarding his long-term future at the Etihad Stadium since falling out of favor under Pep Guardiola during the 2022/23 season, losing his spot in the team to Rico Lewis.

After a reported training ground disagreement with Guardiola, Cancelo was loaned out to Bayern Munich for six months during the January 2023 transfer window. However, Bayern opted not to make the move permanent, leading Cancelo to join Barcelona on a season-long loan deal. Barcelona is now considering ways to secure Cancelo’s services permanently, although financial constraints may pose a challenge.

In an interview with journalist Victor Navarro, Cancelo affirmed his desire to continue at Barcelona into the 2024/25 season. This suggests that he sees his future with the Catalan club beyond the current campaign. Manchester City, on the other hand, do not seem inclined to bring Cancelo back into their squad for the upcoming season. Instead, they are looking for a long-term replacement for Kyle Walker, with on-loan full-back Yan Couto emerging as a potential candidate.

Couto, who is also part of Brazil’s senior national team, has been impressing with La Liga side Girona this season. He may have the opportunity to showcase his talents to Guardiola and his coaching staff during pre-season. Couto could potentially follow in the footsteps of his current Girona teammate Savio, who is reportedly set to join Manchester City this summer from sister club ESTAC Troyes within the City Group.
