Ilkay Gundogan was unexpectedly put up for sale by Barcelona despite being one of their most played players during his debut season. The decision was reportedly made due to Barcelona exceeding La Liga’s salary cap and needing to offload players. Initially, Barcelona wanted a fee for Gundogan, but eventually allowed him to leave on a free transfer, which led to Manchester City signing him once again. Barcelona president Joan Laporta claimed that the sale was a sporting decision and not solely based on finances, contrary to the player’s belief.
Gundogan, now focused on Manchester City, will aim to replicate his success in La Liga back in the Premier League. Despite starting the season with cameo appearances off the bench, the midfielder will look to regain his spot as a regular starter for City. With his retirement from international football, Gundogan will be working towards building his fitness and cementing his place in the Manchester City side once again.
