Jamie Carragher has revealed the bizarre reason he was blocked from interviewing David Silva by the Premier League champions amid the simmering tensions between Manchester City and Liverpool.

Silva spent 10 years at Manchester City after signing from Spanish side Valencia in the summer of 2010 and quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most talented midfielders. Alongside Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure, the Spaniard became a stalwart of the club’s early Premier League success under Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini, which led to Carragher becoming a huge fan.

So much so that when Silva announced he would be leaving the Premier League once his contract expired at the end of 2019/20, the former Liverpool defender tried to stage an interview with the midfielder for Sky Sports.

However, City were quick to deny the request by Carragher and Sky Sports with the current Premier League champions believing the 44-year-old ‘wears red pom poms’ during his appearance on the sports channel.

“Prior to David Silva’s City departure I wrote how he was one of my favourite ever Premier League players,” wrote Carragher in his latest Telegraph column. “I wanted to interview Silva before he left English football, well aware of City’s belief that their rivals receive more favourable media coverage.

“When told of my request, City’s response was they would grant no such interview to me because ‘I wear red pom poms’. Every ex-player in the media wants their team to win but no other club has reacted to me in this way.”

These Jamie Carragher’s claims shared on Twitter gathered a number of replies from a wide range of Man City supporters, who were not shy in sharing their own thoughts on the matter.

“Hmmm but we allow Gary Nevile and Rio Ferdinand to do interviews with our players.”

“And yet we let Gary Neville interview our players with no issues. What does that tell you about yourself Jamie?”

“Thank God you don’t deserve to interview any city player at least Neville respects players.”
