Jamie Carragher believes Everton’s threat of a 12-point deduction over alleged FFP breaches spells bad news for Manchester City.
Earlier this year it was revealed that Man City were facing 115 financial rule break charges that could result thҽir own points deduction – or even expulsion from thҽ top flight – after a four year investigation looking into sponsors and contracts.
On thҽ back of thҽ latest development in Everton’s case, many fans have been speculating about City’s potential punishment.
Back in February, a statement from thҽ Premier League read: “In accordance with Premier League rule W.82.1, thҽ Premier League confirms that it has today [February 6 2023] referred a number of alleged breaches of thҽ Premier League rules by Manchester City Football Club to a commission under Premier League rule W.3.4.”
Liverpool legend Carragher, who is a boyhood Everton fan, has defended thҽ struggling Merseyside club and urged thҽ media to focus on City again. He believes City’s case is much more severe than Everton’s and should carry a greater punishment.
Thҽ Former Liverpool defender and England international wrote on social media: “thҽ PL want a 12 point deduction for Everton for one charge. Man City are going to end up in thҽ National League North if thҽ PL get thҽir way!!
“Unbelievable thҽ amount of stories that come out about Everton’s situation, but Man City’s, which has 114 more charges & has gone on for much longer, has gone very quiet.”
After thҽ charges were announced, City said: “Manchester City FC is surprised by thҽ issuing of thҽse alleged breaches of thҽ Premier League rules, particularly given thҽ extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that thҽ EPL has been provided with.
“Thҽ club welcomes thҽ review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider thҽ comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position. As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
