Clinton Morrison finds it amusing whenever doubts are cast over Erling Haaland, the Manchester City superstar. Despite discussions about his playing style and lack of touches in games, pundits like Alan Smith and Paul Merson have praised Haaland’s unique talent and goal-scoring abilities.
Even though former players like Michael Owen have downplayed his finishing skills compared to others, Micah Richards expressed frustration at the criticism Haaland faces.
Morrison, however, has encouraged people to stop questioning Haaland’s abilities and not underestimate him. He highlighted the high standards Haaland has set for himself and suggested that occasional goal-scoring droughts are normal for strikers. The former player emphasized that Haaland remains the Premier League’s top goalscorer and has been exceptional alongside Phil Foden.
Morrison emphasized the need to appreciate Haaland’s consistency and impact on the team, especially during crucial moments like the upcoming match against Liverpool.
Despite being a constant topic of discussion, Haaland’s mental strength allows him to thrive under the spotlight. If he delivers a standout performance against Liverpool, Morrison believes that even his doubters will acknowledge his brilliance.
“I don’t know why they sleep on [Erling] Haaland, don’t sleep on Haaland, as Merse [Paul Merson] said. He doesn’t have a lot of touches, you can’t question [him]”, he said.
“What I’m trying to say is don’t moan about him for not scoring for one or two or three [games], because he’s set so much high standards, strikers can get through little ruts.”
“They are minor chinks but they’re little chinks. When it’s the little chinks, he will turn up and deliver and he’s still the Premier League top goalscorer, him and [Phil] Foden have been outstanding recently.”
So much so that Clinton Morrison has admitted that he finds it humorous when Manchester City number nine Erling Haaland is even doubted at this point.
“When I hear these question marks over Haaland, I do laugh, I laugh because against Man United, you saw his finish there. He was quiet, gets the chance and Merse is spot on, it’s a fantastic finish.”
The potential for Haaland to be a game-changer in the title race against Liverpool adds to the significance of his performance. With managers like Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola involved, Haaland’s contribution could be the deciding factor in Manchester City’s success.
Morrison’s belief in Haaland’s ability to silence critics and shine in key moments reflects the confidence and support the striker has from those who understand his true potential.
