Rio Ferdinand has publicly acknowledged that Rodri has surpassed his former Manchester United teammate Michael Carrick as a defensive midfielder.

The well-known pundit recently included the Spanish international in his list of only 12 world-class players currently playing the game.

In a statement made in October on JOE, Ferdinand mentioned that if Carrick were playing today, he would be among the best number six players in the world, alongside Rodri and Casemiro.

Despite Carrick being considered one of the most underrated players of his generation, with claims that he should have had more England caps, Ferdinand, who played alongside him at both Manchester United and for the Three Lions, admitted that Rodri has surpassed him.

On his show ‘Vibe With Five,’ Ferdinand explained, “He’s not [Roy] Keane and Rodri’s above him, I have to say. And [Michael] Carrick’s probably the best CDM [central defensive midfielder] I’ve played with. Him and Owen Hargreaves were ridiculous. But I think Roy Keane is another level up because of [being] even more of just a footballer and Rodri, what he’s doing right now, he’s the best CDM on the planet, no doubt.”

Ferdinand’s belief that Rodri is superior to Carrick highlights the former’s excellence. While Carrick was a world-class holding midfielder who contributed significantly to United’s success, Rodri’s capabilities may surpass Carrick’s.

Rodri’s athleticism, reading of the game, passing range, ball-carrying skills, and impact in crucial moments all contribute to his status as one of the best in his position.

Overall, Ferdinand’s acknowledgment of Rodri’s skill set and abilities as a defensive midfielder showcases the evolution and depth of talent in the modern game, noting that the Manchester City player has indeed outperformed the Manchester United legend.
