Manchester City fans are singing praises for Rodri, but it seems that pundit John Giles may have differing opinions on the Spaniard. The player recently made headlines when he scored the equalizing goal for Manchester City in their game against Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium, securing a 1-1 draw.
The pressure was certainly on for City in the second half of the game, with Raheem Sterling giving the visitors the lead in the first-half. Rodri’s goal came as a relief for the team, extending his impressive personal unbeaten run to 55 games and showcasing his undeniable importance to the team.
However, Giles has made some rather unconventional claims about Rodri, suggesting that the player should score more goals and be better on the ball. This conversation arose during Giles’ appearance on ‘The Stand With Eamon Dunphy’ podcast, where he shared his thoughts on the game.
Despite how many chances City had during the game and some decisions that did not go in their favor, Rodri’s goal was a consolation. However, Giles seemingly believes that Rodri’s goal-scoring abilities and general play are lacking.
Contrary to Giles’ views, Rodri’s role as a defensive midfielder is to provide protection for the backline. Nonetheless, he has contributed substantially in the middle and final thirds of the pitch for City. He has managed to score seven goals and provide seven assists so far this season, an excellent record for a defensive midfielder.
It’s important to note that Rodri is an exceptional passer and has demonstrated a high level of skill playing under pressure. In fact, he has played 1301 of his passes while under pressure this season, which is almost 300 more than any other player.
In light of these statistics, Giles’ claims about Rodri’s lack of contribution to the team seem somewhat unfounded. Overall, Rodri’s impressive record as a midfielder, particularly as a defensive strategist, is something that cannot go unnoticed.
