Manchester City have added January transfer signing Julian Alvarez to their Premier League squad list for the current 2021/22 season, despite the fact that he will spend the rest of the campaign on loan at River Plate.
The Premier League champions secured the arrival of the Argentina international from River Plate on deadline day, after more than week of reports linking the young striker with a switch to the Etihad Stadium.
The Argentine forward, who has five international caps for Argentina, signed a five-a-half-year deal at the Etihad Stadium but was loaned back to River Plate until at least July.
Though Manchester City will not see Julian Alvarez arrive until at least the summer, Alvarez’s name has appeared on the updated Premier League squad list for the current season.
Alvarez is included as an under-21 player [contract and scholars] following the January transfer window despite initial doubts over whether he could have been brought in as a City Football Group (CFG) signing.
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
Can someone explain how that makes any sense?? He’s not playing this season for City, so why register him into the PL squad… but also, how does he get registered as an U21, when he’s 22? https://t.co/BtD1YeEuL3

This guy could not play for City U21 squad. He should and must be part of the first City squad from next July.

Really hope he’s part of the first team next season

This most likely means, despite him being loaned out. The loan can probably be recalled if he’s needed. Hence why we registered him. https://t.co/Dou1NLdEcJ
