Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola faces a challenge in finding a replacement for the injured Rodri, with limited options in the squad to fill the midfielder’s position. The club failed to sign a backup for Rodri in the summer transfer window, leaving Guardiola with young players like Nico O’Reilly and Jacob Wright as potential replacements. Gary Neville has suggested that Bernardo Silva could be deployed in a defensive midfield role, although it seems unlikely given his lack of experience in that position.
It would be a risk for Guardiola to trust inexperienced players like O’Reilly and Wright in key fixtures, leaving City vulnerable in the absence of Rodri. While Silva could potentially play alongside Mateo Kovacic or Ilkay Gundogan in a double pivot, it remains uncertain if the Portuguese international will be handed the responsibility of being City’s defensive midfielder moving forward. Guardiola may need to explore different options to address the absence of Rodri in the squad until a suitable replacement is found in the January transfer window.
