Manchester City’s challenge of the Premier League’s Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules is still surrounded by uncertainty. In early June 2024, it was revealed that Manchester City was set to face the Premier League in a legal battle over the division’s commercial rules, with an arbitration hearing scheduled for a two-week period.

The arbitration hearing focused on the legality of the Premier League’s APT rules, which determine the fairness of sponsorship deals between the league’s 20 clubs. The Premier League allowed the other 19 clubs to submit witness statements as part of the case, but there was no public comment from either party at the time.

Despite the lack of public disclosure regarding the outcome of the arbitration hearing, the release of the Premier League Handbook for the 2024/25 season did not include any changes to the APT rules. This has left football finance expert Stefan Borson speculating whether this lack of change indicates that a decision has not yet been made or that the Premier League successfully defended its rules against Manchester City’s challenge. The situation remains ongoing.
