Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has hailed Manchester City‘s captain Fernandinho as the best defensive midfielder in Premier League history.
Though hat-trick star Raheem Sterling took the man of the match award, the 36-year-old Brazilian contributed immensely in the game as City moved 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League.
With Rodri rested, Fernandinho made his first Premier League start since December and sat at the base of the Manchester City midfield and pulled the strings effortlessly.
The Brazilian once again belied his 36 years with a display that demonstrated his supreme football intelligence with his trademark skill, tactical awareness and all-round game management coalescing to superb effect.
His understandable lack of pace did not feel like a big problem for most of the game. He made a great clearance to deny Gibson after Hanley had hit the post.
The Manchester City captain had some heavy lifting to do in the first half but enjoyed himself after the break, with his side in firm control. The veteran midfielder even came close to scoring once, but that was the only major miss in an otherwise top-notch display.
Jamie Redknapp has analysed Fernandinho’s performance against Norwich and hailed him as the best defensive midfielder in Premier League history.
🗣️: “He’s the No.1 defensive midfielder the Premier League has ever seen!”

They won’t like what Jamie is saying the truth cuz he’s not Kante who smiles or Roy that gets angry & breaks legs but Dinho does the job of 3 players. Ultimate professional 36 and still bossing as DM. He doesn’t have the PR doesn’t make him any less Premier league Great. pic.twitter.com/iBh1fNzSLV

No one in world football could have played that role any better. No one has ever had the skills to ping an 80 yard pass to the winger and at the same time being the best destroyer in the world.
