Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Manchester City defender Yan Couto’s potential move to Borussia Dortmund for a fee of around €25 million. Despite an impressive loan spell at Girona, Couto was not seen as the long-term solution at right-back for City. Dortmund, known for signing young talent, is set to secure Couto’s signature pending final details.

City have already made two sales this summer, and Couto’s potential transfer could be their third. Romano reports that City and Dortmund still need to finalize the structure of the deal and payment terms before the transfer can be completed. If the deal goes through, City should reinvest the money from Couto’s sale, along with other transfers, to sign a backup for Rodri, who picked up an injury in the Euro 2024 final.

It is crucial for City to have a backup for Rodri to avoid being without him for a significant part of next season in case of injury. By reinvesting the potential income from Couto’s sale into a suitable understudy for Rodri, City can ensure depth in their squad and potentially find a player who could challenge for a starting spot. Romano suggests that City should focus on bringing in a player who can support Rodri and potentially push him for a starting role.
