Pep Guardiola insists “everything is under control” with his Manchester City contract, but talks over a new deal won’t necessarily take place during the six-week break for the World Cup.
Guardiola, who has guided City to four Premier League titles, four League Cups and the FA Cup, will be out of contract in 2023 and his future at the club remains unresolved.
The Spaniard has always said that he will stay at the Etihad as long as his players continue to believe in his methods and fight for the City cause.
He recently hinted at his long-term future with Manchester City following their dramatic win over Fulham.
His exuberant celebrations at the end of the win against Fulham last week showed how happy he is with life at City and he has assured supporters that there is nothing to worry about with regard to his future.
“I said many times, I don’t talk about that. Everything is under control, it’s perfect, the decision will be made together with the club the moment it has to be made,” said Guardiola.
“I said many times, I had the feeling that both the club and myself are happy to be together. It’s not the moment, tomorrow against Brentford is the only important thing right now. When we have time, when the moment we feel it both sides, we take a decision.”
Guardiola has won everything except for the Champions League at City, but insists his motivation for remaining at the club is not about silverware.
“Having fun [is my motivation]. There are stressful moments, in the bad moments, it’s not all the time you win, all the time you’re happy and all the time it works like you’re thinking. It’s not about achievements after six or seven years, it’s seeing you are comfortable being here,” he said.
Manchester City face Brentford in their final match before the FIFA World Cup pause, with the Sky Blues having the opportunity to head into the break at the top of the Premier League table.
City are looking for their third home win in a week, after victories over both Fulham and Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.
