Manchester City supporters have reacted with a mixture of shock, disbelief and frustration after reports claimed that Enzo Fernández is set to join Manchester City from Chelsea in a deal worth around €140 million.
The reaction came after a City Xtra post highlighted the huge development, with supporters quickly taking to X to debate whether the reported transfer makes sense for the club.
While some fans immediately focused on what Fernández could add to the midfield, others were far less convinced. A number of supporters appeared to question the reliability of the report itself, while others simply could not believe Manchester City were prepared to spend such a staggering amount on another midfielder.
According to the report from TyC Sports, Manchester City and Chelsea have reached an agreement for Fernández, with the Argentine midfielder reportedly set to sign a contract running until 2032, with an option for another season. The reported fee is approximately €140 million.
For City supporters, however, the biggest question is not necessarily Fernández’s ability.
It is whether this is the right deal at the right price.
Manchester City fans react with disbelief
The initial response from some supporters was anything but excitement.
One fan, Danny, simply responded: “That’s a lie!!”
That short reaction perfectly captured the disbelief surrounding the report. For some City supporters, a €140 million move for Fernández sounded so extraordinary that their first instinct was to question whether the story could actually be true.
Another supporter, ItsBlue56, replied: “Really??”
The reaction was accompanied by emotional emojis, highlighting the surprise generated by the reported transfer.
Others were even more blunt.
One supporter described the potential signing as “Trash”, while another reacted with “Fucck” and another simply posted “Smfh.”
These responses suggest that the reported transfer has divided opinion before Fernández has even had the opportunity to pull on a Manchester City shirt.
And that is understandable.
A €140 million transfer immediately creates enormous expectations.
If City really are prepared to make Fernández one of the most expensive players in their history, supporters will expect him to become a central figure under Enzo Maresca.
Some fans are already thinking beyond Enzo Fernández
Interestingly, not every reaction was negative.
One of the more positive responses came from Rory Starbrook, who wrote:
“Good we need wingers and a right back now.”
That comment is particularly revealing.
Rather than questioning Fernández’s arrival, the supporter appears to see the signing as another step in a wider Manchester City rebuild.
The midfielder could potentially strengthen one area of the squad, but supporters are still expecting more business elsewhere.
Wingers and the right-back position remain obvious areas of discussion among fans. The reaction therefore suggests that some supporters could accept the huge investment in Fernández if City continue strengthening the squad in other positions.
That could become particularly important under Maresca.
The former Chelsea coach is now tasked with leading Manchester City following Pep Guardiola’s departure in June 2026. A major rebuild was always likely to attract significant spending, and Fernández could become one of the most important pieces of that transition.
Why Enzo Fernández has created such a debate
There is no question that Fernández arrives with an impressive reputation.
The Argentina international has already experienced major pressure during his career. He moved from River Plate to Benfica before joining Chelsea in a British-record-level transfer at the time.
According to TyC Sports, his reported transfer from Chelsea to Manchester City would take the total value of the transfers involving Fernández, River Plate, Benfica and Chelsea to approximately €279 million.
His Chelsea spell also produced significant success.
The midfielder helped the club win the Conference League in 2025 and the Club World Cup in the same year. He also became Chelsea captain during his time at Stamford Bridge.
Yet his relationship with Chelsea supporters reportedly became increasingly complicated during 2026.
That background makes the reported move to Manchester City even more intriguing.
For City fans, however, his past at Chelsea matters less than what he can contribute at the Etihad.
Replacing Rodri is the huge question
Perhaps the biggest reason supporters are scrutinising the transfer is the situation in Manchester City’s midfield.
Fernández is reportedly arriving as part of City’s attempt to replace Rodri, according to the TyC Sports report.
That is an enormous challenge.
Rodri has been one of the defining players of Manchester City’s recent era. Replacing his influence cannot realistically be reduced to signing another famous midfielder.
Fernández would therefore arrive with enormous pressure.
City supporters will expect him to help control matches, progress possession and provide the tactical intelligence required in a team competing for the Premier League and Champions League.
That expectation could become even greater because of the transfer fee.
A player costing around €140 million will inevitably be judged against the very best midfielders in world football.
“We need wingers and a right back now”
The comment from Rory Starbrook also points towards another important issue.
Even supporters who appear open to Fernández’s arrival do not necessarily believe the rebuild is complete.
The message was clear: City still need wingers and a right-back.
That could become one of the defining themes of the remainder of the transfer window.
Manchester City have already made major investments in the squad, and the reported Fernández deal would represent another enormous financial commitment. But fans want those investments to translate into a balanced squad.
Signing one superstar does not solve every problem.
If City are serious about challenging for every major trophy under Maresca, supporters will expect the club to address several positions rather than simply relying on Fernández to transform the midfield.
Fans are also questioning the credibility of the report
Another interesting reaction came from Filip, who tagged Fabrizio Romano and simply posted question marks.
That response reflects a familiar phenomenon in modern transfer news.
When a major transfer suddenly breaks, supporters often look towards the most established transfer journalists for confirmation.
The reported Fernández move is particularly explosive because of the size of the fee.
A €140 million agreement is not an ordinary transfer story. It is the kind of deal that can dominate football discussions worldwide.
So it is understandable that some City supporters are waiting for further confirmation before celebrating.
The reaction from another supporter, meanwhile, focused on the timing of the news. Pepstrickyblues noted that it was the first time they had seen Cityreport ahead of City Xtra.
That comment attracted significantly more engagement than several of the emotional reactions, showing just how closely supporters were following the developing story.
Could Fernández become a key player under Maresca?
If the transfer is completed as reported, Fernández would have a fascinating opportunity at Manchester City.
He already knows Maresca from their time at Chelsea, which could help him adapt to the manager’s expectations.
Maresca’s appointment also changes the context surrounding City.
This is no longer Guardiola’s Manchester City.
The club is entering a new era, and major signings such as Fernández could become symbols of that transition.
The midfielder would not simply be another expensive acquisition. He could become one of the players around whom Maresca builds his midfield.
That could ultimately determine how supporters judge the transfer.
If Fernández quickly becomes a dominant presence in midfield, the €140 million fee may eventually become a footnote.
If he struggles, however, the price tag will follow him everywhere.
Manchester City fans have already made their feelings clear
The reaction to the Enzo Fernández transfer report has been remarkably varied.
Some supporters are excited about the possibility of adding a world-class Argentine midfielder.
Others are deeply sceptical.
Some simply cannot believe Manchester City would spend €140 million on the deal.
And there are supporters who appear willing to welcome Fernández, but only if City continue strengthening the squad in other areas.
The most telling response may therefore be the simplest one.
“Good we need wingers and a right back now.”
That perfectly summarises the current mood.
Manchester City fans want ambition, but they also want balance.
If Fernández really does arrive for around €140 million, the pressure will immediately be enormous. Under Maresca, he could become one of the central figures in City’s post-Guardiola rebuild.
For now, though, the supporters are still waiting.
Some are excited.
Some are furious.
And others are simply asking whether the €140 million Manchester City transfer bombshell is actually real.
