Manchester City’s ability to compete in the upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign has been saved by the resignation of three directors at Girona, their sister club. This comes after Girona secured a historic third-placed finish in La Liga, earning them a spot in Europe’s premier club competition. Stronger rules surrounding multi-club ownership initially created uncertainty over the participation of both Manchester City and Girona next season.

As a result of the guideline changes, both clubs are now able to compete in the Champions League next season, but with several modifications to the ownership model. The City Football Group will reduce its shareholding in Girona to under 30 percent and put shares into a “blind trust” to ensure independent operation. Three board members of Girona have stepped down to facilitate the participation of both clubs in the tournament.

The new UEFA Champions League format, starting from the 2024/25 season, will involve 36 clubs participating in a single league competition. Under this format, teams will play eight matches against different opponents, half at home and half away. The teams will be drawn from four seeding pots to determine the opponents, providing a fresh approach to the renowned club tournament.
