The transfer window may be closed in England, but that doesn’t mean players still can’t leave Manchester City. It was a relatively quiet January on the transfer front for City, with the only major move being Kalvin Phillips departing the Etihad after an unsuccessful 18 months. The defensive midfielder has joined West Ham United on loan for the rest of the season in a bid to play regular football ahead of Euro 2024.

Another player who could still follow Phillips out of the door is Sergio Gomez. The defender arrived in the summer of 2022 and has also suffered a lack of action. City paid £15m to sign the promising Spaniard from Anderlecht as an alternative replacement for Aleks Zinchenko after pulling out of a move for Marc Cucurella. However, Gomez has rarely featured since his move, spending just 361 minutes on the pitch so far this season, leading to speculation that he could depart.

According to fotoMac, Galatasaray “wants to sign” Gomez before the deadline to reinforce their left-back options following the departure of former City man Angelino. The Turkish transfer window is open until February 9, giving Super Lig clubs more time to conduct business. It’s reported that Gomez is “making plans” to leave City as he wants more regular action and fits the profile of manager Okan Buruk.

Gomez is low on the City pecking order, but it could still be a risk to let him go at this stage in the season. Pep Guardiola has a small squad by design, but the drawback is that it only takes a couple of injuries for City to be left very short. Having already allowed Phillips to leave without replacing him, it may not be wise to let another player depart when City won’t be able to even try and bring someone in.

However, a loan could do Gomez a lot of good personally. It’s not reported what sort of deal Galatasaray are looking for, but it would make sense for City to allow him to leave temporarily to gain experience. Gomez has potential, and it might be hasty to sell him off so soon.
