Manchester City had a quiet 2024 summer transfer window, with only a few incoming and outgoing deals at the Etihad Stadium. One of the most notable transfers was the sale of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid for £81.5 million. Despite Alvarez’s contributions in goals and assists, Paul Merson believes this decision could backfire on Pep Guardiola, as Alvarez wanted to push himself at a new club.
Alvarez, who was signed for £14 million and made 103 appearances for City, brought a good output in the final third. However, his departure was deemed necessary as he was unhappy at the club and City rarely stand in the way of players who want to leave. Despite the potential impact of Alvarez’s absence, City decided to cash in on the opportunity, with Guardiola confident in his squad’s depth and options in midfield to compensate for Alvarez’s departure.
