Manchester City’s 0-0 draw against Inter Milan in the Champions League was a surprising result, considering City’s strong start to the season. This was their first group game in Europe’s elite competition where they shared the spoils in five years, indicating that Pep Guardiola’s side is yet to hit top gear. Both teams displayed flashes of brilliance, with Inter Milan causing defensive problems for City in the first half, while City dominated the second half. Inter Milan’s 10 shots in the first half were the most by an opposing team in a Champions League game at the Etihad Stadium since 2017.
The high number of shots conceded by Manchester City against Inter Milan can be attributed to the visitors playing through City’s press with ease and City being sloppy on the ball in the first half. Inter Milan’s technical quality allowed them to exploit the space provided by City’s defensive errors, giving them ample chances to counter-attack. This first-half display would have given Pep Guardiola food for thought as City prepare for their upcoming clash against Arsenal, highlighting the areas that need improvement for the Premier League giants.
