Since taking charge of Manchester City in 2016, Pep Guardiola has overseen many player movements, helping the club secure numerous trophies. However, Jamie Carragher recently criticized Guardiola’s decision to let Cole Palmer leave City, praising the young midfielder’s success at Chelsea. Carragher admitted that Guardiola may have underestimated Palmer’s potential impact and skill, and acknowledged the manager’s willingness to give the player a chance. Despite Guardiola’s confidence in other talents like Foden and Bernardo Silva, Carragher believes Palmer could have been a valuable asset to City.
After departing City for Chelsea in a £42.5m deal last summer, Palmer shone in his debut season, scoring 25 goals and providing 15 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions. The winger expressed feeling unfulfilled in a bit-part role at City and went on to be named the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season. Carragher’s remarks suggest that Guardiola may have erred in allowing Palmer to leave, given the player’s exceptional performance and potential to contribute significantly to City’s success.
