Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali received a suspended two-month ban after placing bets on football matches, including one where he bet on Manchester City to lose to his own team. The ban will only be enforced if he commits further breaches before the end of the 2024/25 season. Tonali is already serving a separate 10-month ban for unrelated offenses during his time in Italy, and had previously admitted to betting on multiple matches after joining Newcastle.
Written reasons revealed that Tonali had placed several bets on Newcastle matches, including a bet on them to beat Manchester City in the League Cup third round. He also included Newcastle in accumulators to beat other teams like Brighton & Hove Albion, Burnley, Brentford, and West Ham United. Newcastle ended up winning the match against Manchester City, with Alexander Isak scoring the decisive goal and Kalvin Phillips starting for City in a significantly changed starting eleven.
In a later meeting between Newcastle and Manchester City in the Premier League, Newcastle once again emerged victorious, with Norwegian forward Alexander Isak scoring the winning goal off a Kevin De Bruyne assist. Despite Tonali’s involvement in the betting scandal, Newcastle continued to perform well in their matches, securing unexpected wins against top teams like Manchester City.
