Roberto De Zerbi has disagreed with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s claim that his players were tired during a recent FA Cup match. De Zerbi pointed out that City players are used to playing many games and should not have been fatigued just three days after a tough Champions League match. However, with City facing a grueling schedule and a small squad, it is understandable that Guardiola may have felt his players were not in optimal shape for the match.
City’s performance in their previous matches, including a draw against Carlo Ancelotti’s side and a loss at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final, could have taken a toll on the players. Despite De Zerbi’s assertion that City are accustomed to playing many games, the quick turnaround from a 120-minute match to another high-stakes game just days later is a tough challenge for any team. The City squad will need to recharge and regroup for their upcoming Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Looking ahead, City will need to ensure their players are adequately rested and prepared for the remainder of the season as they push for another Premier League title. While De Zerbi may have questioned Guardiola’s assessment of the players’ fatigue, it is evident that City’s schedule and squad size present unique challenges that the team must navigate to maintain their competitiveness in multiple competitions.
