Kevin De Bruyne was named amongst the substitutes for Manchester City’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg against Real Madrid due to illness, despite his landmark performance against Crystal Palace. The Belgian star recently scored his 100th City goal and has been an integral part of the team since returning from injury in January. De Bruyne scored on his first Champions League appearance of the season and has played a vital role in City’s European success.
The midfielder’s absence was confirmed by Guardiola pre-match, stating that De Bruyne was unwell and unable to play due to vomiting. Despite initial expectations of him starting against Real Madrid, De Bruyne had to be substituted from the squad last minute. Manchester City is unbeaten in Europe since 2022 and are on a 25-match unbeaten streak across all competitions, aiming to secure a spot in the Champions League semi-finals.
Real Madrid and Manchester City are facing each other for the third consecutive season in the Champions League, with the winner of their quarter-final tie set to take on either Arsenal or Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. The confirmed starting XI for both teams were revealed, with De Bruyne not in City’s lineup due to illness. Guardiola will be looking for a strong performance from his team as they look to advance in the competition.
