Manchester City are prepared to take a financial hit on Kalvin Phillips, who has struggled during his loan spell at West Ham United. Phillips has made errors leading to goals, been sent off, and is now injured, leading to West Ham deciding not to purchase him permanently. Leeds United, Phillips’ former club, is reportedly interested in a potential loan deal for him, contingent on their promotion to the Premier League.
Despite City’s initial high hopes for Phillips, it may be in their best interest to sell him for a lower fee rather than loan him out again. City rarely make market mistakes, but Phillips’ struggles at West Ham suggest that his association with City may need to be ended. If Phillips is to move on permanently, he may need to accept a lower salary due to his recent form.
Leeds could potentially benefit from Phillips’ return if they secure promotion to the Premier League. City’s asking price for Phillips is £30 million, a fee that Leeds may struggle to meet along with his high wages. It remains to be seen what will happen with Phillips this summer, but a fresh start at another club may be the best option for his career.
