Former Manchester City stars Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez reunited last night after Barcelona’s Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain. Both players left the Etihad Stadium last summer, with Gundogan joining Barcelona on a free transfer and Mahrez moving to Saudi club Al Ahli for £30 million. City made contract offers to both players, but Gundogan found them unacceptable while City accepted Al Ahli’s offer for Mahrez. The pair have been missed by City this season but have been enjoying their new adventures.
City played a thrilling match against Real Madrid and drew 3-3 in the Champions League, missing some key players. Pep Guardiola will be confident of beating Real Madrid in the second leg. Gundogan started for Barcelona in their game against PSG, where he produced a great display in a 3-2 win. After the match, Gundogan posed for a photograph with Mahrez, who was in attendance. The reunion of the two former City players was cherished by fans.
City fans have missed both Gundogan and Mahrez, with Gundogan being missed more for his contributions in midfield. Mahrez provided fantastic numbers as a wide player, while Gundogan’s directness and ability to support strikers like Haaland have been lacking at times this season. Despite their departure, City fans still appreciate the talents of Gundogan and Mahrez and wish they were still a part of the team in the close title race.
