Manchester City’s long-standing sporting director, Txiki Begiristain, is reportedly planning to step down from his role, potentially coinciding with Pep Guardiola’s departure. Begiristain has overseen a successful period in the club’s history, working with three different managers and helping shape their squad planning and recruitment policies.
Journalist Joan Fontes has reported that former Barcelona director, Ramon Planes, is eyeing the soon-to-be-vacant sporting director position at Manchester City. However, no official departure date has been set by Begiristain, with the decision likely to align with Guardiola’s eventual exit strategy. Guardiola himself may sign a 12-month contract extension, giving City time to find a suitable successor before his potential departure in 2026.
The possible changing of guard in the City hierarchy has sparked interest from external parties, with Planes positioning himself to potentially fill Begiristain’s role. The club is waiting on decisions from both Guardiola and Begiristain before any official announcements are made, allowing for a smooth transition in leadership at the Etihad Stadium.
