Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji has responded fiercely to Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold following comments made by the England international about the success of the Etihad Stadium.
Alexander-Arnold had stirred controversy before the Manchester City-Liverpool match by discussing the differences in success between the two clubs and how the trophies mean more to his club and its fans due to financial situations and team-building methods.
In response to Alexander-Arnold’s comments, Akanji, along with other Manchester City players like Erling Haaland and Ruben Dias, did not let it affect them and focused on their performance on the pitch.
Akanji stated that the comments did not bother him or his teammates and suggested that Alexander-Arnold should refrain from commenting until he achieves the same success as Manchester City.
“Probably he tried it to (get into the minds of Manchester City) but it didn’t matter to us,” Akanji said. “I don’t think it affected us. In the end we tried to go on the pitch and show our performance. I mean, it didn’t affect me.”
“I don’t know why he said it. He didn’t even play (on Sunday),” Akanji continued. “He can’t tell (us how it feels) because he didn’t win it. That’s all I have to say. If you win three titles in one year, or five which we did last year, then he can speak again.”
The Swiss international’s strong response to Alexander-Arnold showcased his team’s determination and focus on their own success rather than being distracted by external comments.
The resilience and confidence displayed by Akanji and his teammates reflect the winning mentality instilled by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
