Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed a double injury blow ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final clash with Newcastle United. Guardiola and Eddie Howe are preparing to meet for a fourth time this season on Saturday evening, with Manchester City and Newcastle United clashing at the Etihad Stadium for a place in the semi-finals of the Emirates FA Cup.
Manchester City suffered a setback earlier this season when they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle at St James’ Park, but they were able to secure victories in both Premier League meetings between the two teams. Kevin De Bruyne made a successful return to the Premier League in January after being sidelined for five months, scoring the equalising goal and assisting in the winning goal against Newcastle.
However, De Bruyne will be one of two key players missing from this weekend’s quarter-final match, with the Belgian international and goalkeeper Ederson both ruled out due to injury. De Bruyne will also miss upcoming international friendlies against Spain and England due to a groin problem, while Ederson faces a month on the sidelines after sustaining a muscular injury in a collision during the draw with Liverpool.
Guardiola confirmed De Bruyne’s injury and expressed gratitude for his recovery, mentioning that he will not be ready to play against Newcastle. The City manager also mentioned that Ederson is improving and could potentially return after the international break for the game against Arsenal.
On a positive note, Guardiola mentioned that Jack Grealish, who has been out since the fifth round win over Luton Town, is getting better and back with the first-team group ahead of the quarter-final match.
Overall, Manchester City will have to navigate through their injury woes as they face Newcastle United in the FA Cup quarter-final, with key players like De Bruyne and Ederson unavailable for selection. Guardiola remains hopeful for their recovery and is looking forward to the upcoming challenges ahead.
