Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola recently spoke about why he chose to start Manuel Akanji over John Stones in the last game. Guardiola made the decision to play Akanji instead of Stones in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. Despite this draw, City lost ground to both Liverpool and Arsenal in the Premier League title race. Manchester City was unable to move above Liverpool with a win on Tuesday night due to the draw with Chelsea.
During the game, Raheem Sterling scored the first goal, but Rodri’s thunderous effort in the 83rd minute canceled out Sterling’s goal. This draw brought an abrupt end to the Blues’ 11-match winning streak. Manchester City registered 31 attempts against Chelsea but struggled for control, resulting in a draw similar to November’s 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge in the reverse fixture.
Akanji has only played twice since early January after an injury, with Saturday’s draw being his third appearance of the year. Stones had been the preferred choice for a recent UEFA Champions League game. Guardiola’s hybrid role for Stones was crucial in Manchester City’s treble success last season.
Guardiola defended his decision to start Akanji ahead of Stones by saying, “There are players that take their rhythm more quickly, but Manu (Akanji) was injured for two, three, four weeks. I rely a lot on Manu, he’s an incredible player and I will decide who plays, that’s all. And as much games you play, the more rhythm you have. That’s normal.”
Guardiola will have to make a similar decision for the upcoming game against Brentford, with both Stones and Akanji available. A victory would move Manchester City above Arsenal and to within just one point of Liverpool. Guardiola’s decision to rotate these two players reflects his strategy to maintain a strong and competitive squad while aiming for success in the Premier League.
