Manchester City has dealt a significant blow to Manchester United in their quest to become the world’s largest football club, as new figures from the USA have emerged. These new statistics are the latest development in the Etihad club and the wider City Football Group’s ongoing ambition to become the biggest football club and football organization globally.

Earlier this year, data from Deloitte revealed that Manchester City was the second-highest revenue-generating football club in the world, with total revenues of €826 million. This placed them just behind Real Madrid with €831 million.

Furthermore, new figures from Nielsen, compiled by sports media analyst Larry Johnson and relayed by The Athletic, revealed that Manchester City was the most-watched English team in all competitions in the United States throughout 2023. Their total average viewership in the United States was 36.9 million. The data also showed that Manchester United ended 2023 with a total average viewership of 13.4 million, placing them below other English clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool.

The popularity of Pep Guardiola’s team in the USA is expected to continue as Manchester City is widely anticipated to return to the USA this summer as part of their preparations for the 2024/25 campaign. Talks have been underway concerning a friendly match with Premier League rivals Chelsea. Manchester City’s previous visit across the Atlantic ahead of their Treble-winning season included matches against Bayern Munich and Club America in Green Bay and Houston, which drew substantial audiences.

Last summer, Manchester City traveled to Far-East Asia for preparations, where they played three matches against Yokohama F. Marinos, Bayern Munich, and Atletico Madrid in Japan and South Korea.

Manchester City’s rapid global expansion and increasing reach in the global game have been emphasized by the new figures emerging from the United States and further reinforce their status as a top footballing organization with a growing international following.
