Manchester City and Tottenham are both interested in the French wonderkid Bastien Meupiyou from Nantes. According to Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport, Manchester City’s Director of Football Txiki Begiristain has sealed a £26m deal for Argentinian wonderkid Claudio Echeverri and is now setting his sights on Meupiyou.

However, a deal for the 17-year-old seems unlikely to happen before tonight’s transfer deadline, with a summer move more realistic.

Hawkins previously wrote on Twitter that “Tottenham and Manchester City are monitoring Bastien Meupiyou. The French defender will stay in Nantes. Lens made an offer this winter, which was rejected by Nantes who wants to extend his contract until June 2025. One to watch next summer.”

Meupiyou, at just 17 years old, has already made his Ligue 1 debut and was even handed his first start against one of the league’s giants, Marseille, by coach Pierre Aristouy.

Though he received a straight red card after just nine minutes, this speaks volumes about just how highly rated the Paris-born sensation is.

According to Football Talent Scout, Meupiyou can also operate in defensive midfield, and his profile as a left-footed defender has led to comparisons to Chelsea No. 5 Benoit Badiashile. At 6ft 3in (1.91m), Meupiyou’s physical presence is also worth noting.

Though unlikely to happen before tonight’s transfer deadline, Manchester City could bid for the Frenchman this summer to add him to their squad and focus on the next generation. Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as it unfolds.
