Manchester City missed out on signing Lucas Bergvall after he agreed to join Tottenham. According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City were monitoring the 18-year-old, with Barcelona showing keen interest. However, in a surprising twist on transfer deadline day, Bergvall chose to join Tottenham.
Romano reported on X (previously known as Twitter): “Lucas Bergvall to Tottenham, here we go! Barcelona have just been told from the player’s camp that he changed his mind and he will join Spurs. Tottenham is ready to pay more than €10m (£9m) to Djugården with add-ons, agreement done. Medical will take place on Friday.”
The move to Tottenham is considered to be a significant coup for the club. Bergvall has been compared to Jude Bellingham due to his maturity, physical dominance, and strong technical ability. He is already a full Sweden international and looks set to have a very bright future.
It is not clear how far Manchester City went in their pursuit of Bergvall. However, it would be disappointing if they did not even attempt to sign the teenager before loaning him out, as there is little room in Pep Guardiola’s central midfield department for another option right now. It is essential to mention that £9m is a small sum for a club like Manchester City when it comes to one of Europe’s most exciting talents, so the Citizens may easily look back on this deal as a missed opportunity.
The hope is that it does not come down to that. This missed opportunity is something that Manchester City’s fans and the club’s hierarchy may likely regret, but it remains to be seen how this decision plays out moving forward.
