During his career, Frank Lampard played with numerous world-class footballers, but one Manchester City player left him ‘genuinely amazed.’ Lampard’s unexpected stint at City occurred when he joined on loan from sister club New York City for the 2014/15 season, making 38 appearances and scoring eight goals.
Lampard had the opportunity to play alongside exceptional strikers such as Nicolas Anelka, Andriy Shevchenko, and Didier Drogba at Stamford Bridge. Despite this, Lampard considers Sergio Aguero as one of the best players he has ever lined up with.
In an interview with Man City’s in-house media, Lampard expressed his admiration for Aguero: “I played with one of the best strikers at Chelsea in Didier Drogba. Sergio is obviously a different style to Didier. But I was genuinely amazed by him.”
“We would do one-on-ones in training where you’d run through on the keeper and it was just incredible to see his talent – sitting the keeper down, feigning to go one way and then doing a different kind of finish.
“He had a true goalscoring instinct and a very loveable approach to the game.
“Sergio came in every day, did his thing, smiled a lot, had a cheeky way about him.
Compared to Didier Drogba, who is considered a Premier League all-time great, Aguero surpassed him in terms of scoring, becoming the highest-scoring foreign player in Premier League history, with 184 strikes.
Aguero’s association with Pep Guardiola also played a significant role in refining his skills, turning him into a more complete player, capable of adapting to a complex system.
Aguero’s career included winning five league titles, although he never won Europe’s top prize. Despite this, Lampard’s acknowledgment of Aguero’s skill and influence demonstrates the Argentine’s impact as one of the best strikers in the game.
