Former Manchester City player Oleksandr Zinchenko has found similarities between English footballer John Stones and Argentine defender Javier Mascherano. Zinchenko spent six years at City before making a move to Arsenal during the 2022 summer transfer window for £32 million. Having played with various players during his time at City, Zinchenko has shared his thoughts on one of his former teammates.
The 27-year-old has likened Stones to Mascherano, a comparison he made during a one-word challenge video published on The Athletic’s TikTok channel. Stones was signed by City in 2016 from Everton for a fee of £47 million. He has made 242 appearances for the Citizens across all competitions, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists. Stones and Zinchenko appeared together in 66 games and had a points per game average of 2.53.
Mascherano, who made 97 appearances at Barcelona under Pep Guardiola, was known for his versatility, having played as a defensive-midfielder and a center-back. Stones, who was deployed as a midfielder throughout last season, has shown similar adaptability. Zinchenko himself changed his position during his time at City under Guardiola, transitioning from a midfielder to a left-back.
Zinchenko’s comparison of Stones to Mascherano gives us an insight into the English defender’s versatility and adaptability on the field. With both players known for their ability to play multiple positions, it is evident that they share similar qualities. Stones’ experience playing as a midfielder last season further solidifies this comparison. Overall, Zinchenko’s observation offers an interesting perspective on Stones’ skill set and playing style.
