Sergio Aguero, the Premier League icon and Manchester City legend, has made a significant admission regarding the club’s 115 charges issued by the Premier League last year.
These comments from the former Argentine striker come as Manchester City approaches the one-year anniversary since the Premier League confirmed the charges issued to the reigning champions following a lengthy investigation.
In early February 2023, the Premier League charged Manchester City with over 100 breaches of its financial rules after a four-year investigation, referring the club to an independent commission over alleged rule breaches between 2009 and 2018.
The club was also accused of not cooperating since the investigation began in December 2018. In response, Etihad Stadium officials stated that they were “surprised” by the charges, and that they were supported by a “body of irrefutable evidence.”
Speaking to Stake on the subject of Manchester City’s 115 Premier League charges, Sergio Aguero emphasized, “I can say that our achievements as a team, on the field, were won with effort and sportsmanship, fair and square.”
Aguero, widely recognized as one of the finest footballers to grace England’s top-flight, claimed a number of division titles during his time with Manchester City.
He notably scored the winning goal against QPR in 2012, securing the Premier League trophy in dramatic fashion, and went on to claim a further four top-flight titles under Manuel Pellegrini and Pep Guardiola.
In May 2021, Aguero brought an end to his Manchester City career by agreeing to sign for La Liga giants Barcelona on a two-year contract, with a buy-out clause set at €100 million.
Overall, Aguero’s admission sheds light on the controversy surrounding Manchester City’s charges and highlights his commitment to fair play and sportsmanship throughout his career.
