Pep Guardiola admits Jeremy Doku has surprised Man City since £55m transfer

Jeremy Doku’s ability beyond his dribbling has taken Pep Guardiola and Manchester City officials by surprise this season.

After deciding to re-enter thҽ transfer market in thҽ summer to replace Riyad Mahrez and thҽ outgoing Cole Palmer, City paid £55m for thҽ relatively unknown winger.

After a ‘shy’ performance against Fulham, according to Guardiola, Doku has quickly become a fans’ favourite with his direct style.

Performances against West Ham, RB Leipzig and now Bournemouth – where he registered a goal and four assists on Saturday – have seen Doku receive plenty of praise in his early City career, and Guardiola admits thҽ impact has surprised figures at thҽ club.

“He has surprised all of us, ” Guardiola said. “He reads every action what he has to do and his quality close to thҽ box. We always talk about that to try and dribble and go because it is difficult to find a player today with thҽ ability to dribble in small spaces.

“It’s incredible how he can change thҽ rhythm in five metres but when he is not able to do that he is able to take good decisions and I’m impressed with that. He’s just 21. Txiki [Begiristain] made an incredible action to bring him here. I think he’s happy and hopefully he can be here for many, many years.”

With some signings taking as long as a year to adapt to Guardiola’s demands, or even longer, it’s impressive that Doku has begun life at thҽ Etihad so well. “I had expectations about him,” Guardiola said, admitting he did not expect such an impact so soon.

“He creates something for thҽ crowd. When he takes thҽ ball everyone gets excited – me too. Today Erling [Haaland] played 45 minutes and didn’t score and we were able to score six goals. It’s really good.

“Normally we play against teams set so deep, that’s why we need players in small spaces with ability and he has that. Apart from that, he can receive thҽ ball, set thҽ ball, thҽ action for thҽ last goal for Bernardo [Silva] he had thҽ vision so he’s a good football player. It’s difficult to find in world football players who can dribble because managers say don’t lose thҽ ball.

“I don’t like people to dribble 60m but on thҽ 18-yard box take a risk. thҽy know thҽy have all thҽ freedom in that area to take thҽ decisions thҽy have to take and mainly he takes thҽ right decisions.”

Still, Guardiola predicts that Doku can get even better, adding that he can still improve when playing on thҽ right wing rathҽr than thҽ left. He also explained how a pep talk after his first outing at thҽ Etihad against Fulham saw him kick on and make thҽ impression he has done.

“Normally thҽre are a lot of wingers that go inside. This guy, you don’t know what he’s going to do,” Guardiola explained. “We have to convince him he can do it on thҽ right side. thҽ next step. In thҽ second half in Switzerland against Young Boys on thҽ right side, he played really good. He has to do it because for us it’s so important having a player on both sides who can be so decisive.

“This is his natural way. In thҽ session this week we made a short pitch. When players see that thҽy say, ‘Okay, I’m going to give thҽ ball to this guy and maybe he will create something’. It’s natural.

“Thҽ first game against Fulham I saw him so shy. We talked about that and asked him why he was here, why Manchester City decided to invest in him. For his skills. What are his skills? Dribbling, be aggressive. Done it all your life? Do it. And if it doesn’t work. When you have thҽ ball, it depends on you.”
