Manchester City defender Nathan Ake is close to signing a new and improved long-term contract with Pep Guardiola’s side after a superb season for the Premier League winners.
The 28-year-old Dutch defender had to deputise at left-back due to Joao Cancelo leaving the club, so the 28-year-old filled in at full-back as well as his preferred role of centre-back.
His performances have been vital for City and this new role for the Dutch defender has seemingly brought out his best performances, too.
It’s been claimed that the Blues are set to reward Ake with a new mega-contract for his development this season.
Earlier today, De Telegraaf reported that the Manchester club and Pep Guardiola have decided to reward the Dutchman with an improved contract following his impressive campaign last season.
Now, one journalist has shared some behind-the-scenes details on how close the two parties are to agreeing a deal.
In a recent Twitter post, Fabrizio Romano had this to say on the matter.
He said: “Manchester City are close to reaching an agreement with Nathan Aké over new long term deal. Talks are advanced — understand it’s just matter of time to get it done. Salary will be significantly improved, as Telegraaf reported.”
The renewal of the defender has been pushed by Guardiola in particular and it seems that the renewal of the defender’s contract is only a matter of time, with Voetbal claiming it’s a ‘greatly improved’ contract proposal for the Dutchman.
With Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo looking likely to depart from the Etihad, the left-back spot may be Ake’s to lose going into the new season.
Moving forward, if Ake does end up signing a new deal and can continue to put in impressive displays on the pitch, he’ll no doubt be seen as one of the most important players in Guardiola’s squad.
